Trip to CANPACK and Plzeňský Prazdroj
Trip to the new CANPACK can plant in Stříbro and to the Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery in Pilsen
CANPACK: A billion cans a year
The sales of cans have boomed during the pandemic. In particular, breweries had to switch from kegs to this packaging format within a few days. As part of Packaging in Action, we will go to the CANPACK plant in Stříbro near Tachov, where they experienced this rebirth just at the time when they started a new factory for 100 million euros. It is capable of producing up to a billion beverage cans per year. In the plant, we get acquainted with the entire process of production of a beverage can, from the delivery of aluminum rolls, through stamping the base of the can, shaping its body, cleaning, internal coating, external decoration, inspection to palletizing and storage. CANPACK’s largest customer is Plzeňský Prazdroj, which it supplies just-in-time.
Plzeňský Prazdroj: The largest brewery in the Czech Republic
When visiting Plzeňský Prazdroj in the “capital of beer”, we will visit the brewery and bottling plant in particular. We will therefore get acquainted with the basic parts of beer production and packaging, although due to anti-epidemic measures there will be no direct access to packaging lines. Plzeňský Prazdroj has a very strong returnable packaging agenda – most sales in the Czech Republic are more or less related to bottles, kegs or beer tanks. Recently, however, packaging in cans has increased significantly. Among other things, the brewery has committed itself to being carbon neutral in beer production by 2030, reducing the use of plastics to a minimum and avoiding non-recycled plastics altogether. The participants of the excursion will thus receive complete information not only about the current packaging portfolio of the largest Czech brewery but also about its future direction.
